2024 Polymer clay sculptures overview and future plans

Anne-Marie Paradis

Here's a look at the polymer clay sculptures I've made last year. ☻

Most of the artwork was commissioned! Unfortunately, I didn't have much time to focus on my sculptures that year. At the start of 2024, I was unaware that my full-time job would become quite demanding and exhausting. There were many changes happening, which made it very stressful. Honestly, it left me feeling tired and somewhat depressed. This made working on my art more challenging, but I was determined to finish all my commissions!

They were such fun projects. ♡ I got back to working on animals only and it was healing for me. People who come to me are always so friendly and kind and very understanding. I appreciate that immensely!

I started the year making a bas relief sculpture of a galaxy cat. Galaxy animals are a series I have with full body sculptures of animals with galaxy colours and stars. I love making them! I thought making one as a big portrait would look pretty cool! I have a full video on my Youtube channel showing how I made it, have a look if you're interested! (I'll leave the link bellow). This piece is also available in my Etsy shop!

I then created another bas relief piece of a leopard, which was smaller than the galaxy cat. While experimenting with this format, I discovered that I enjoy working on larger pieces more. I have numerous ideas and plans to create more animal portraits in this style.

Finally, I started on my first commission of 2024! A lovely cat named Marble. She has the most amazing eyes ♥︎ and a unique little body, she's adorable and it was the perfect project to get me back into commission work. I was a bit rusty! ahaha It took a while to get her shape right but her owner was very sweet and patient with me and we were able to work together to bring Marble to life. Everyone was happy! ☺︎ I also have a Youtube video of this one. ✧

I was thrilled about my next commission! It marked my first collaboration with someone from Japan. I was tasked with creating a bronze sculpture of a wolf guardian. Although we both communicated in English, which isn't the first language for either of us, we overcame the initial challenges and worked well together. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the tale of Yamato Takeru and the significance of wolves in Japanese culture. Here’s the story shared with me through our email exchanges:

yamato takeru

Here's the story of Yamato Takeru who, according to the chronicles of Japan, was said to be of the imperial family. He devoted his whole life to battle the enemies. When he went to the East to the Kento area to conquest enemies, he happened to be caught up by a conflagration. He almost died but a Japanese wolf appeared and guided him to a safe zone and saved him. And so, Japanese wolves have been worshiped as heroes and gods. In the Kanto area in Japan, there are many shrines that worship Japanese wolves. They were believed to protect agricultural crops from being destroyed from animals like deers and boars.

After that amazing project, I started the work on 2 beautiful dog sculptures. Kenny and Balto! They're adorable pups and they were going to be used as wedding cake toppers! I loved the idea!

I also created these charming little cat sculptures! They're smaller than my usual work, as I was requested to make them as miniatures. The client, who is also an artist, wanted them sent unpainted so she could paint them herself. Although this isn't something I typically do, I found the idea enjoyable. It made me consider the possibility of collaborating with other artists in the future.

The next commission I started was my biggest one of the year! A large sculpture depicting the mating dance of a flame bowerbird. I was asked to make the male bird and the female on a detailed base. If you know me, you know I find making birds challenging! The wings and feathers take a long time to make. I could make them faster but I aim for a realistic. And making the feathers thin but sturdy enough that they hold their shape is not easy ahah. But I welcomed the challenge and I'm really enjoying working on this! It is still not finished. The wonderful person who commissioned me for this is patient and very understanding. I cant wait for her to finally have it home. Almost there - I'm painting it right now!

✦ 2025 plans! ✦

I won't be accepting any commissions for the time being. I appreciate everyone who approached me for a sculpture commission. I'm truly touched and grateful for the love and support! However, I need some time to focus on my extensive list of ideas I've gathered over the years, haha! I also recently launched my YouTube channel and want to dedicate more time to creating videos. Additionally, I aim to update my Etsy shop more frequently! It's currently closed, but I plan to reopen it by this spring with many new sculptures available for sale!

Take care and thank you so much for stopping by!
